Can I just say….

“I am now and always will be your friend” is a beautiful sentence. It’s got grace and poise and all the echoes of a lifetime of friendship. It’s poetic and crafted. It’s a clever man putting a beautiful emotion into beautiful words. It’s evocative and delicate.

“Because you are my friend,” on the other hand, is a sledgehammer of tragedy. It’s wasted potential, it’s missed opportunities—it’s a man who had so very little left losing one more part of his heart. It’s not beautiful because he has nothing to spare for crafting a sentiment, for clothing a simple tragedy in adorned language. It’s loss, plain and simple.

And the essential difference between TOS and the Reboot is that TOS Kirk and Spock are forever aiming higher, aspiring to greater and better things, and always reaching new heights. Reboot Kirk and Spock are always failing—-and their failures make them great. Failing to contain his feelings is the greatest thing Spock could have done here.

OK, so point the first: can we have a thousand fics where Scotty is always threatening to quit and Kirk learned his lesson this first time so new crew members panic hilariously every time it happens in the future but there is never any danger of Kirk accepting Scotty’s resignation ever again? And Scotty can use it on anything—from actual ethical showdowns to “I will not work on a ship that does not have three-ply toilet paper”—and Kirk will never do anything but roll his eyes in the future, maybe splutter a little bit in futile rage. And Scotty will use this in the future—all the fucking time—because Captain Tight Pants Perfect Hair deserves every second of it as far as he’s concerned.

Point the second: how much do we all love that Scotty and Kirk have to negotiate when and how one accepts/offers a resignation but Scotty and his life partner are 100% on the same page on this issue? And the dude doesn’t even, like, argue. He’s just like, “oh, whoops, sorry, is it time for my resignation letter now? Because I have it. It’s right here.” (PS: I am shipping these two SO HARD now. SO. HARD.)

Point the third: I want to see 10000% more instances of the clothes Scotty wears on shore leave. I want to see all the Hawaiian shirts, all the neon ties, everything.

Point the fourth: I want to see Scotty treat his communicator like a phone all the time. I want him to cover the mouthpiece—ineffectively—on away missions and while grumbling about Kirk and while eating dinner and while finishing off an argument with life partner dude about how much Scotch is a wise decision. I have always loved how all the inappropriate phone social conventions turn up with the communicators. I bet Scotty would tots save photos to his communicator and be projecting holographic renderings of his kids to diplomats in his old age as they smile politely and hope desperately that he hasn’t managed to add more memory for more photos on his (spoilers: he has) and that the photo stream will end soon (spoilers: it won’t). I bet he has invented horribly annoying games with lots of loud annoying music to play on his communicator when he’s bored on away missions.

One of the things I like best about fanfiction is how you can start from the steady base of canon and read a 100k fic and then start fresh and read a oneshot from that same steady base of canon. You can let people tell you these stories new and endlessly varied ways so you can hear the same one twenty times and somehow its still different because of even a single word. But what I like best about it is that every single story that makes its mark on you can exist simultaneously without necessarily negating any of the others and that months later you can be reading something else and suddenly you realize there’s a piece of knowledge that isn’t canon at all that’s from that fic about those things but this other bit you remember and have amalgamated is from an entirely different one about those things. And you are able to hold this nebulous beauty of strangely coexisting nearly paradoxical stories in your hands and love them all at once. You can meet Nyota Uhura ten times over and pick out the bits you like best from each backstory and fuse them into one little piece. She can meet Spock twenty different ways and you can believe in every single one of them. Sometimes her third language is Mandarin and sometimes its Arabic and sometimes its Vulcan and at the same time its all three all at once.

Man I don’t know I just love fanfiction.

I think this is beautifully said. Fanfiction has trained us to contain multitudes within us. There are untapped universes spinning out in every direction and nothing but possibility from here to the horizon.

Into Darkness shows more racial diversity among cameos from alien species than it does among human characters in main speaking roles. Worse still, iconic Star Trekvillain Khan Noonien Singh was recast as Benedict Cumberbatch, possibly the whitest man on the planet.
In Khan’s original role, he was super-intelligent, super-strong, the head of a genetically engineered master race—and brown. In other words, the opposite of the usual racial stereotypes one saw in mid-20th century “foreign” or “exotic” villains. Whitewashing Khan into being an posh-sounding Englishman reinforces the message sent out by Kirk, Spock, and the morally ambiguous Admiral Marcus: Good or evil, everyone in power is a white male. Suddenly, the awkwardness surrounding one of John Cho’s publicity interviews makes sense. “Who is your favourite villain?” he is asked. “Ricardo Montalban,” he answers. “He was badass. And a man of color, I might add.” Nervous laughter. Next question, please.

Representation matters. Star Trek is proof of that. Kirk and Uhura famously shared US TV’s first interracial kiss, and Uhura went on to inspire the first black female astronaut to go into space. When Nichelle Nichols was thinking of quitting the show, Martin Luther King, Jr. felt that her position as a role model was so important that he personally asked her to reconsider staying on.
