The pack decides to do something special for Stiles on Mother’s Day. I’m so sorry I didn’t mean for this to be so long please don’t kill me.
Mother’s Day was the worst day of the year for Stiles.
It was the one day that he didn’t want to deal with people. Not his dad, not Scott, not anyone. He’d dress up in a white button up and a tie, with pressed slacks and shined black dress shoes. He’d go down to the local grocer and buy a bouquet of flowers. And then he’d go to the cemetery.
Sometimes, he’d cry. Sometimes, he’d just sit there and talk to her, and tell her about how his life was going. Sometimes, he’d just sit there. Silent. He would share the silence with her, listening, waiting, though he was never quite sure what he was waiting for.
“So, it’s been a weird year, mom.” Stiles said, setting the lilies down on the ground, crossing his legs underneath him. “I don’t really know how to tell you this, but… well, Scott’s a werewolf. I know. I know. You probably don’t believe me, but it’s true. He’s a werewolf.” Stiles shook his head, making shapes with his finger in the dirt.
“You remember the Hales? Well, turns out they were all werewolves. Crazy, right? Yeah. And when their house burned down, that was actually hunters! Werewolf hunters! Man, it’s a really sad story… But Derek Hale, he, uh, he came back to town. And now he has a pack. Well, uh. Well, I guess. I guess… we… have a pack.”
He cleared his throat, rubbing his palms on his pants. “I’m still a human. No worries there. But I’m like… I’m like a gay human? And I’m… I guess I’m sort of… dating Derek. I don’t know. I don’t know if you’d call it dating. I mean he basically lives with me now. You know, the whole. The whole pack does. Dad tolerates it because he’s still dealing with the whole, you know, werewolf thing.”
A beat passed between them, during which he just stared down at the ground, before he shuffled, shaking his head. “I wish you could’ve met them, mom. God, you would have loved them.” He chuckled, shaking his head.
“Scott’s still a big idiot. I don’t think he’s ever going to stop being a big, lovable, idiot. But his girlfriend, she’s amazing. Really smart, and pretty, and fierce, too. God, she’s fierce. I’m pretty sure she knows like six hundred ways to kill someone without using her hands.
“And then, you remember Lydia and Jackson? Yeah. Lydia, she’s not a werewolf, either, but she’s… she’s pack, you know? I think she’s like a witch, or like a… I don’t know. It’s complicated. She’s pretty damn fierce, too. I think… I think you’d get along well. And Jackson. Well. He’s still completely unbearable, but, you know. He needs hugs. Like. A lot of hugs. I probably spend like thirty percent of my life hugging that kid at this point. He, uh… he coulda used a mom like you, you know? Someone… someone to give him a lot of hugs.”
Stiles stopped for a second, putting his head against his knees, letting the tears comes. He knew by now not to try and stop himself from crying. Knew that letting it all build up just leads to panic attacks. A few minutes later, when he feels okay enough to keep talking, he sighs, and looks up.
“So, then, uh. There’s Erica. And she’s… mom, she’s so great. She tries to be really tough, you know? But she isn’t. Not really. She’s like this little… angel. Same goes for Isaac and Boyd. They all try so hard to be big and bad, but they’re just… They’re just these little broken things, mom. And I try so hard to put them back together.”
He took a deep breath, wiping his hands over his eyes. “And then… there’s Derek. And I swear, mom, some days, I think I’m going to kill him. And then… every now and then… I can see past this little mask he puts on and… mom… I don’t know how I’m going to put him back together, mom. I don’t know how… I don’t know how… he’s so beautiful, mom. God, he’s beautiful. And he’s so… he’s so broken… And I don’t know if I can keep him afloat. I don’t know if I’m strong enough…”
For a long while, Stiles just sat there, listening to the sounds of the streets around him. Every now and then, other people would pass, carrying their own flowers. And they would look at each other and nod in understanding before they would keep walking.
Eventually, Stiles stood, walking to his Jeep and getting inside. Taking a deep breath, steadying himself, he put it in drive, and headed back for home.
(ten minutes later)
Stiles walked through the front door of his house and stopped, eyes widening, looking at the scene in front of him in utter shock. The pack was piled around the kitchen table, giggling hysterically. A cake sat in the middle, with presents sitting next to it. When they saw him, their faces brightened.
Erica jumped up, grabbing his hands and pulling him to the table, pushing on his shoulders so he ended up in Derek’s lap. The alpha put his hands on Stiles’ hips, rubbing them softly, leaning up to kiss the nape of his neck.
“What’s… what’s going on…?” He asked a little breathlessly, looking up when he heard someone else enter the kitchen.
His father glanced over at the stuff on the table, shaking his head. “Sorry I didn’t get you anything. I wasn’t aware that you were a mother.” He didn’t sound rude, though, a smirk on his lips as he rubbed the top of his son’s head and headed back to his bedroom.
“Oh, don’t act like you don’t already know it.” Lydia said haughtily, rolling her eyes. “Of course you’re our mom. Now, open my present first.”
She shoved a package in his direction, neatly wrapped in light blue paper, with a dark blue bow on top. He looked nervously over his shoulder at Derek, who just smiled encouragingly, nudging him on to open it. With a deep breath, Stiles turned back around, and began unwrapping the paper.
Lydia got him a copy of Latin for Dummies (which seemed like an oxy moron) and she smirked at him as he opened it, making the comment that maybe next time he could do his own translations.
Allison’s gift was wrapped in dark red wrapping paper, with no bow. When he opened it, he was confused, his eyebrows knitting together. “A… scrapbook?” But upon opening it, it made sense. Pictures of the pack lined all the pages, with words like “love” and “family” and “trust” littered amongst them. His eyes watered with tears, and he leaned across the table to hug her, tight, for a long moment, whispering, “I love you” into her ear, which she repeated back to him.
Erica and Isaac handed him a gift at the same time, hastily wrapped in cheesy dollar store wrapping paper with bears on it. He opened it with a grin on his face, his eyebrows rising at the sight. A red hoodie, with black lettering on the back that read “PACK MOM” with his lacrosse number. “Oh, guys, this is awesome. Thank you.” He hugged them, too, and Erica pecked his lips, giggling.
“This one’s from Jackson and I.” Scott said quickly, passing his gift across the table. Immaculately wrapped in the same paper as Lydia’s- he suspects she actually did the wrapping- it felt light in his hands. And it didn’t make sense to him that Jackson and Scott would buy a present for him together, until he opened it. Batman #1. Only Scott would think of it, and only Jackson could afford it. He would have hugged them, but he had to take a moment to collect himself, Derek’s hands rubbing his back gently, muttering, “shh” into his ear.
One more. Stiles reached across the table, taking the little black box from Boyd. He opened it for about two seconds before he slammed it closed again, his cheeks turning bright red. “JESUS, BOYD.”
“What?! I just thought, you know, Derek isn’t always around…”
The table erupted in raucous laughter that lasted through most of the night.
(later that night)
The pups were all asleep already, passed out in the living room after eating too much sugar at dinner. Stiles was wearing the pack mom hoodie, surprised at how comfortable it was, and Derek grinned down at him when he entered the room. The older male flicked off the light and then slid into the bed, wrapping his arms around Stiles and dragging him onto his chest.
“I love you, mama.”
“I love you, too, papa.”
And Stiles fell asleep smiling that night. Maybe Mother’s Day wasn’t the worst day of the year anymore.
